Short Term Disability Benefits
Short Term Disability benefits are paid to an employee who, as a result of a non-occupational injury or illness becomes disabled and is unable to perform their job.
The benefit will continue for the duration of the employee's period of disability subject to the plan design.
Long Term Disability Benefits
This benefit provides a monthly income (usually to age 65) for employees who become totally disabled due to accident or sickness and are unable to work.
Benefit Amount
The benefit amount is normally expressed as a percentage of salary and includes a maximum dollar amount of benefit.
Pre-Existing Conditions
Pre-Existing Conditions can vary from plan to plan. The following is a common pre-existing condition.
Benefits will not be paid for a sickness or injury for which the employee received medical treatment, consultation, care or services within 6 months of their effective date. This exclusion will not apply to a disability which commences more than 12 months after the effective date.
General Exclusions
Disabilities resulting from the following will not be covered:
- criminal code offences and/or unlawful acts
- self inflicted injury or illness
- war, riot, insurrection, civil commotion, or service in the Armed Forces
- medical or surgical care which is cosmetic.
